dc.description.abstract Globally, among the top five causes of maternal mortality in women, the leading is hemorrhage. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the need for nurses and midwives is apparently increasing due to a deficit of capabilities, with only 3.5% of the world's healthcare staff managing 27% of the disease burden, hence poor participation in CPD activities. The aim of the study was to assess the factors influencing effectiveness of CPD in clinical practice for nurses and midwives in Meru County. This study will highlight the gaps faced in achieving optimal CPD, and advises strategies to improving its effectiveness. The study used qualitative and quantitative techniques, adopting RCT design in three phases, among 78 sampled nurses and midwives. In phase one, data was collected using questionnaires, interview schedule checklists and case studies. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS version 26 while qualitative data was analyzed thematically. Pearson’s chi square test was used to test the relationship between knowledge and CPD uptake in clinical practice. Paired t-test compared means within the control and intervention groups. Results demonstrated gaps in midwifery clinical competencies. Despite the provision and use of BEmONC guidelines, there’s need for ongoing trainings to standardize practices. Generally, a good understanding on skills competencies was depicted, though with major gaps observed in progressive management of third phase of labor and in completion of the patograph. Strategies to bridge quality gaps, through relevant personnel and tailoring skills-based specific courses should be considered. en_US
