Effect of Technology on Students’ Behaviour in Universities in Kenya.

Abstract

Technology is part of human day-to-day life, and education sector is no exception. Thus, teaching and learning have become digitalized. We live in a digital World of Technology and are part of the Net Generation hence use of Technology cannot be ignored, since it has become part of human life, with a high percentage of the people using smart phones and computers in their daily lives. Studentsin universities use technology toacquire and receive information, do research, undertake assignments and University expenditures do online business and kill boredom. Behaviour is a way in which human beings acts or have response to a particular stimulus. Behaviour change takes place in the physical, mental and social phases of human life from infancy, childhood, adolescence and adulthood. In this paper we focus on the effect of technology on students’ behaviour in Kenyan universities. The paper is based on a theoretical review of the literature. We start with a conceptual definition of technology in education then define behaviour change and discuss the use of technology in universities in Kenya and its effects on the behaviour of students. The change in behaviour is discussed with reference to teaching and learning, academic integrity academic performance and social interaction. We highlight the positive and negative effects of technology on student behaviour and make suggestions on how technology can be used in universities for positive behaviour change among students
